Dog Mangled My Cat… Need First Aid Help…?

Posted on 24 January 2010

so i’ve had this cat about 3 years and she never leaves the porch (she’s a good cat). about 2 days ago, my neighbor was walking her dog on the “walking trail” and her dog came into my yard and mangled my cat. i did file a police report, they came over once, but haven’t called since. don’t understand why, because there’s a leash law, and the owner was NOT walking her dog on a leash >:(. i’ve had my cry, but it’s been suppressed by anger now. anyway, she’s still alive, and i do NOT believe in euthanization, just because if someone or something is still alive, there IS a chance of a miracle happening, you know? so i do not believe there is internal bleeding or broken ribs, but if someone knows how to check for these, could you tell me?. also, i believe at least 2 of her legs are broken, but their badly cut. should i wait to splint them until her wounds heal, or should i go ahead and do it (I’m too poor to take her to a vet). Her tail still moves, so i’m pretty sure that it’s not broken either. I’ve been giving her pain medicine, but i’ve had to force feed her, and sometimes have had to make her drink water. at first she would drink but, idk… she can move somewhat, we thought she might have had convulsions, but it really doesn’t look like it. She uses two of her legs to move, and uses the crook of her front legs to steer… i really would like some help. and i apologize for this not making any sense, i’m a little shaken to tell you the truth…if anyone can think of anything else i missed, please mention it. i love my cat, and i would like to help her.i don’t know much about first aid, so if someone could help me, please do so. sorry this is so long…

I am so sorry, but you need to get this poor cat to the Vet, you really do. Many vets can help you by making payment plans, or you can go to carecredit.com this is a credit card used specifically at the vet. Maybe call the local shelter or humane society, they may be able to help you.

Dear Sarah, I am greatly sorry for your cat. I have had the same experience with my cat, only we don’t know for sure if it was a neighbor’s dog or not. Anyway, I think you should press the dog’s owners to pay for the vet bill. Your cat needs medical help. You don’t want it getting infections or anything. I know how hard this is for you, so I want to give you a cyber hug! :P You have my up most sympathy and if you want me to I will totally pray for your cat if you want me to.

  3. Jen says:

Please get your cat some vet help – there must be a charity or animal shelter who can help you out. Otherwise your cat will die from infection caused by her injuries. I am so sorry to hear this has happened to your pet – I hope the owner is properly dealt with

  4. Johnny Decca says:

    Take her to the vet!!!
And then sue the owner of the dog for reimbursement. Take pictures of the cat and make sure you get the incident number of the police report.

  5. Muschi says:

Maybe you can take her an animal shelter for help? They probably have vets who take care of the animals.
But your cat is injured and it’s just cruel to not seek any professional help for her. )=

  6. N C says:

Please, find some way to take your cat to the vet. You could take her to a local humane society or ASPCA if you are too poor, they will help you. For now just keep her still and calm and make sure she’s eating and drinking.

  7. BUDDYBOY says:

Get her help immediately. She is suffering, and it’s not love to allow her to suffer.
Here are some organizations that help with vet bills:http://felinediabetes.com/vetbills.htm
Also, a lot of vets will accept payments.

  8. chocolat says:

Poor kitty. I know you said you can’t afford it but this cat needs professional medical attention, not first aid. She is suffering! Please find a way to get her help. Call your local SPCA or rescue group, or even an emergency vet!

  9. Badkitty says:

Take your cat to your local Humane Society. There should be one nearby. That poor animal does not deserve to suffer. That is appalling. Seek proper medical attention for this animal. There are caring people out there who will help.

  10. hisssed says:

YOU CAN’T LET HER SUFFER LIKE THIS! PLEASE TAKE HER TO THE SPCA.they might also help u with your case .but you must get your cat some help.be for it’s to late. take pictures as Evidence to help your case.

  11. nish says:

Take her to the vet NOW if you really care for her

  12. mistymis says:

GET HER TO THE VET STAT!

  13. catlover says:

Even if you can’t afford it you need to bring it to the vet, they will usually work out a payment agreement with you. You need to do it soon because if you wait to long they may file against you for animal neglect. I know it sounds bad but a friend of mine had a dog that was attacked by someone’s dog not on a leash. She couldn’t afford to take it to the vet and tried to do everything she could for the dog, but the wound’s got infected, she took the dog to the vet and they agreed to work out a payment plan, but while they examined the dog they realized the wounds were over a week old. I don’t know who they called there were fines and everything involved and she couldn’t get her dog back. As much as she loved the dog, they still considered it neglect. They told her it should have been dropped at the humane society for medical care if she couldn’t afford it. They said she neglected the animal by letting it suffer.

  14. Sick and Tired. says:

Call the vets in your area and ask for help. Some of them may know of financial aid available. Call any animal shelters or SPCA groups as well. Your kitty needs you to make that effort. From the sound of it, she is just going to get worse and infections will set in.
Start making phone calls and find out what help is out there. Please, for your cat’s sake, find a way to get her help from a veterinarian! She is suffering and euthanasia would be better than her suffering.

  15. milomax says:

Get the cat to the vet. Most will work with you if it is a problem financially.
As far as nobody contacting you, they really don’t have to. You filed the report and that is all you can do. If there are tickets and/or fines issued, it is not up to the police to notify you. Really, it is none of your business to put it bluntly. If you know who’s dog it is, you may be able to go to talk to them and see if they would be willing to help pay for the vet bills. There is also the possibility of small claims court, but that will be time consuming, as well as the fact that if they won’t pay now, they probably wont pay later either-

  16. Fish Lover says:

I’m sorry you don’t have money for the vet but this cat needs a vet NOW-if you can’t get financial help from the SPCA or a payment plan from your vet then you will have to give her up. this is shocking animal cruelty and you could be prosecuted if any of your neighbours found out-you love your pet so do what’s right for her and get her the treatment she needs even if it means you don’t get her back.or the alternative is to get her euthanized-you CANNOT leave her like this. you say you don’t believe in euthanization but try and imagine what it’s like to be in agony and suffering and no-one will help you.

  17. lynne r says:

I’ve asked my friend about your cat. She is a vet. I have summarised what she said below:
Your cat needs URGENT medical attention. If you have any love for your cat whatsoever you must take her to a vet or an animal shelter immediately. She will quite possibly die a long agonizing death otherwise. I agree with you about the euthanasia, but remember, when people or pets are dying and in pain, they are given pain medications to help them get by – your cat does not have this luxury. Anything other than getting her medical attention TODAY is utter neglect and animal cruelty. I appreciate you can’t afford vet bills but vets WILL accept payment plans for animals in distress. Call around and explain your situation.
And please post back the outcome – there are a lot of cat lovers here who seem very distressed about this post and would love to know the outcome, including me.
Also, please don’t adopt any further pets unless you can afford vet bills.
Good luck, please give her a pat for me.
PS Giving her human medications may make her worse. This is why you need a vet. Only vets can prescribe medications for animals. You may be giving her human medications that are killing her.

  18. Ruby B says:

Your cat needs to see a vet right away (and I mean TODAY); there’s no way around it. In my state not taking an animal to a vet in that condition is considered animal cruelty and the law will slam the abusers with what the deserve. There are broken bones which could heal wrong and the wounds could get infected, infected the blood and prove fatal. You can’t fix any of this yourself because you aren’t a vet, you don’t have the knowledge or tools.
I strongly believe “If you can’t afford the vet, you can’t afford the pet”, and cases like this confirm my belief. Most vets will be more than happy to work out a payment plan with you so you have no excuses to allow your animal to suffer.

  19. Core says:

I am sorry you and your cat are going through this. I have A LOT of first hand knowledge in this area. I have worked in the Emergency Hospital over 25 years. They legally can NOT turn you away for lack of $. They MUST stabilize your pet first!!! It is YOUR responsibility to take your cat there and do what is right. The vet will take pictures for your case and write a report for you. You will then file your claim in small claims court no matter what is your outcome with the health of your cat. The dog owner will still be responsible for the final bill.
That being said – MOST HUMAN PAIN MEDS ARE TOXIC TO CATS!!!!! I do not know what you are giving but be darn sure it has been cleared by your vet first!!!!!
Good Luck and please do what is right. Do not be afraid. It may not be to late. xoxo

  20. Horsepla says:

what you need to do is gently move your fingers from the spine down the rib cage and you will know if there is any broken ribs. also is there any bruising. next you would want to check for open wounds that may not be bleeding. and since you cannot go to the vet try and make a splint out of pop-sickle sticks just make sure you do not cut of circulation to his/her legs

  21. ryan w says:

Try to cut away or shave the fur surrounding the open wounds. Use a disinfectant diluted in water to wash the cuts at least twice a day, gently. Pat dry the area and apply a salve. You should splint her legs as soon as the bleeding stops and be sure the splints don’t cause chaffing, apply baby powder under the splints to reduce chaffing.
It is a good sign that there is no blood in her faeces and she is able to go to the bathroom on her own. Im worried about infection from the bite the dog gave her. She may get tetanus, Only a vet can help with that.
As for broken ribs, she will have difficulty breathing and the best thing for broken ribs is just to bind the chest with a bandage and not move around too much.
Don’t shoot her up with too much pain killers as she may get too bold and will move around too much causing more damage to herself. She will get thinner from inactivity so you must feed her, force feed her, to make sure her body has enough nutrients to heal, also leave her in the sunshine to get some vit D everyday…
I hope she gets better, she may have nerve damage and may never regain full function of her body, but she will at least heal and live the best she can…
    Good luck!

  22. PuppyD says:

I know that you said that the vet is a financial burden to you right now. But this cat needs to be seen by a doctor. You don’t know what is wrong with her. If she has cut on her legs, they could get infected. If her legs are broken, they could heal wrong and she could never walk properly again.
I am not for putting animals down because caring for them is difficult. But you have to think of the quality of life of the cat.
You need to see a vet.

  23. MimiEllie &Peanut says:

your cat sounds like it need medical attention if you cannot aford the vets try the RSPCA they may help also if you are on benifits the vets may recoment the PDSA they help people on low incomes. The owner of this dog is also liable for the costs of vet treatment as she did not have control of her dog. Phone the RSPCA now and your local vet they may help toward the cost as they think of the welfare of the animal first and will give you the best advice. Hope this helps and your cat is ok

  24. jeni says:

She needs medical attention, right away. I understand that it’s expensive, and that they may want her to be put down. But I’m going to be honest with you… it sounds like she is REALLY suffering. I’ve had multiple broken bones, and if they aren’t set, they are extremely painfull.
I would call an animal hospital (they’re listed in the phonebook or online). Tell them what happened, and that you don’t want to put her down. They will be much more helpfull.
Also the bill shouldn’t be your legal responsibility since it was your neighbor’s animal who did this. Please, bring the cat to a professional.
