First Aid Kits: Being Prepared

first aid kit

When it comes to any situation, being prepared in advance is always something we wish we could do retrospectively. Although you cannot prepare for every kind of accident and emergency as fully as you would like to, one thing you can do is ensure you have first aid supplies. Having a first aid kit is one way that you can be sure that you are able to have what you need in the instance of first aid emergencies.

Getting basic first aid kits is one thing; however having them handy when you need them is another. With that in mind, it is important to consider whether or not you will always remember to take your first aid bag out to the car and if not, it is essential that you buy an additional kit. The same applies for where you go during the day – does your children’s school, and your workplace have all they need to ensure that you and your children can stand the best chance of being treated effectively in the case of emergencies?

As more people start to understand the consequences of not being prepared for emergencies, it’s now the case that more and more innovation in the first aid space has taken place. Buyers are now able to pick up camping first aid kits, which contains apparatus which is suitable for camping-specific and general emergencies. Another great example of this innovation can be found with new products such as pet first aid kits, which can help you to handle pet owners to assist their pets in the best way possible during emergencies. This innovation is ultimately making it easier for people, and their pets, to be safer and to be more likely to be prepared the instance they have to be. Take, for example, the first aid fanny pack – this is something someone is far more likely to carry around, and hence they are far more likely to be able to act in the case of an emergency.

Having a medical emergency kit is one great way to be prepared during an emergency. It is often the case that they do not come with a roll up stretcher. One reason for this is that it will rarely come in useful in the case where you are able to seek immediate help, and the accident has occurred in an easily accessible location. However, let’s consider the thousands of accidents that happen each year when people are off-road, doing sport and trekking – in this instance a roll up stretcher can really make a difference. That’s why you should always consider if one could come in useful before you set-off. Although accidents may seem unlikely, don’t forget that they do happen. Before using a roll up stretcher, try to contact a medical professional for their consultation if possible. Don’t forget that it is possible to do long term damage to a person by putting them on a stretcher incorrectly, or dealing with them incorrectly once they are on.

Dog First Aid Kits are easy enough to create. First you need some kind of container to hold all the medicines, drugs and supplies in such as a tackle box, old lunch box or some other shoe box sized plastic container. It should be water-proof, strong enough to withstand mild pressure and have a clasp of some sort – but not locking.

Label it on all sides with a felt tip marker so that it is easy to read. Something such as “Dog First Aid Kit” or whatever just so you can easily know the difference between your human first aid kit (if you made it yourself as well) and this one for your dog(s) and puppy (s).

Under the lid of your dog first aid kit would be a great place to tape an index card which contains the numbers of your local veterinarian, poison control, and other canine emergency numbers for your dogs (emergency vet, etc).

It would also be a good place to list a description of your dog(s) including color, weight, name, health issues, distinguishing characteristics and a recent photo labeled with the name of each pet. Your dog will thank you in the case of some sort of disaster or emergency when you are not at home for some reason.

Find the Best Hearing Aid at the Best Price

First aid

A revolution is afoot in the hearing aid industry. The stale and stagnant hearing aid companies have some new competition such as Zounds who have launched with revolutionary approaches and technologies aiming to help their customers hear better while not breaking their wallets in the process.

Whether we realize it or not, we live in a world which is very much shaped by past revolutions. Regardless of the example, revolutions are bound to happen, especially when something is inherently wrong in the first place. Our founding fathers and their fellow colonists began to move away from the European monarchist ideals held by their British brethren, eventually standing firm on a new amalgam of republican beliefs of which can best be described as simply and uniquely “American”.

Business monarchies still exist, but innovation is an ever-present revolutionary force. Kings of industry fall at the feet of innovators with a better idea. For well over a hundred years, Eastman Kodak dominated the consumer photography market and for much of this time, Kodak was the innovator. Kodachrome film, instamatics and disposable cameras were all the best ideas of their time and helped cement Kodak’s dominance, its monarchy. But Kodak became complacent. They ignored the trends of the very industry it created and ruled. By the late 1990s, digital photography began taking a large market share away from Kodak, which remained steadfast in its belief that film photography was the only good idea. Photography customers wanted a new, better idea and Kodak wasn’t responding. In what seemed like an instant, Kodak became an afterthought in consumer photography.

The hearing aid industry has been operating the same way for decades and is not paying attention to the cries of change demanded by its customers. Hearing aid companies annually release sub-par products, which add to the overwhelming and confusing arsenal of products already offered. Additionally, these hearing aids are typically a repackaging of last year’s model with a new name and branded features which aim at deflecting attention to the over promised and under delivered elements such as noise and feedback cancellation. And what does the average customer pay for a high-end hearing aid? $2,500 to $4,000 per aid. And they still don’t work well.

The new hearing aid companies are aware of the industry’s shortcomings and are revolutionizing the way hearing aids are manufactured and sold.

There are 10 key challenges to choosing today’s hearing aids:

#1: Hearing Speech with Mechanical Noise Any previous hearing aid wearer will tell you that despite how much he paid for that “revolutionary” technology, he still cannot hear conversations at his own table in a noisy restaurant.

Look for noise canceling technology, which isolates unwanted mechanical noises, such as a fan or road noise, and electronically eliminates them. This is different than noise reducing hearing aids that reduce wanted and unwanted noise at the same time.

#2: Hearing Speech with Human Noise

The background “babble” noise of a busy restaurant can be enough to avoid eating out entirely. Yet, those suffering from a hearing loss often feel that they must avoid noisy environments such as restaurants, family gatherings, and social events.

Look for a hearing aid with directional microphones that form a “cone of listening”, suppressing unwanted human noises and other sounds from behind and focuses on the sounds in front.

#3: High Fidelity Sound

Traditional hearing aids on the market are only programmed up to 5,000 Hertz. The range from 5,000Hz to 8,000Hz is considered the high frequency range and is where most hearing loss begins. It is also where the important consonants of speech, such as “t”, “ch,” and “s” are found. Be sure your hearing aid is programmed to cover the full hearing spectrum, up to 8,000Hz, so you can hear all critical speech consonants.

#4: Eliminating Feedback

We all know what feedback sounds like. We’ve been around our friends or family members when their hearing aids squeal. It’s embarrassing and painful. This all too common issue of hearing aids whistling or squealing is a result of feedback. Just like a poorly-tuned microphone at open-mic night, amplified sounds leak back into a hearing aid’s microphone and create a vicious cycle where noise is re-amplified again and again. Current hearing aids try to avoid feedback using a crude mechanical solution-shaping the hearing aid shell to form a tight fit in the ear canal, sealing off the ear.

New hearing aids utilize sophisticated feedback technology that electronically isolates and cancels the leaked sound, thus eliminating feedback.

#5: Comfortable Fit

the vast majority of today’s hearing aids require a mold to be taken of the ear and ear canal. A silicon-based, taffy-like substance is poured into the ear canal. It hardens and then is sent to an offsite factory where the hearing aid is laboriously fabricated.

The result is an expensive hearing aid that is uncomfortable to wear, causing perspiration and ear itch.

New hearing aids use soft foam sleeves, which expand comfortably to contour the ear canal, absorb moisture and help eliminate ear itch.

#6: Using The Phone

Objects that are brought up to the ear cause an acoustic reflection. Too many of today’s hearing aids still squeal when a phone is close to the hearing aid, causing wearers to take out their hearing aids when using the phone. This is like taking your teeth out to eat.

Look for feedback cancellation technology that electronically eliminates the acoustic reflection caused by a phone and allows owners to use a phone as it was meant to, up to the ear. In most instances, a telescopic (wired device connected from hearing aid to telephone) is not needed.

#7: Reducing Occlusion

A common complaint of hearing aid wearers is occlusion- the “plugged up” feeling resulting from the sound of your own voice vibrating within your head. The tight shells of today’s hearing aids are specifically designed to seal off the ear canal in an attempt to manage feedback. Occlusion is the unpleasant result of this approach. Hearing aids that use soft foam sleeves reduce occlusion.

#8: Accurate Programming

Conventional hearing exams are conducted using headphones, which have different acoustical properties than the hearing aids. In addition, they may only test 6 to 10 frequencies.

New hearing aids use the hearing aids themselves as headphones and test and program the full 16 frequency band range, resulting in less translation and programming errors and fewer return visits.

#9: Remote Controllable

Traditional hearing aids offer their owners limited control over their devices. Wearers must struggle with little knobs on the hearing aid faceplate. The knobs are difficult to adjust and typically only control volume.

The newest hearing aids are controlled by a handheld remote control. Sophisticated remote controls even allow users to adjust the volume, bass, and treble and chose among different listening environment presets.

#10: Rechargeable Batteries

Traditional hearing aids require replacement batteries. Those tiny batteries can cost over a dollar a piece and last anywhere from 4 to 6 days. Look for rechargeable batteries. Not only do these batteries provide more power to the hearing aid, they last all day and can be recharged in a complimentary charging station each night.

#11: Virtually Invisible

Hearing aids in the past were bulky, clunky, and frankly, ugly. New hearing aids are miniature, cosmetically appealing, and virtually invisible to others. They aren’t Grandpa’s old hearing aids anymore.

#12: Reasonable Price

Higher price doesn’t equal higher performance. Traditional hearing aids can cost between $2,500 and $4,000 per hearing aid. New hearing aids that use a combination of foam sleeves and sophisticated feedback cancellation allow significant manufacturing cost savings, which are passed on to the consumer. New hearing aids with this technology can retail for under $2000 per hearing per pair.

Complacent hearing aid companies have pulled the wool over the collective eyes of their customers for too long. The mob has formed and shouted for change. These new hearing aid companies are making sure that these cries do not go unanswered. They are approaching the hearing aid industry with revolutionary approaches, technology and pricing, much to the delight of those who currently suffer from a hearing loss.

Building A First Aid Kit For Your Home

first aid wound

If you are not a doctor, nurse, or first aid attendant building a first aid kit for your home can seem a bit frightening but we are going to tell you exactly what you need to put in home first aid kit to make sure you are prepared to deal with your family’s first aid issues.

I recommend building two of these kits – one for the house and one for the car. You never know what might occur while you are in your car and since your busy building one tow will not be any problem at all.

In general these kits will contain the same content whether you live downtown New York or in a tiny village or in the rural countryside with a few exceptions. The farther you live from a major hospital or trauma center the more additional items you will need in your kit to compensate for the distance and increase evacuation time in the event of a major emergency.

First you need to decide whether you want a case that is portable or one that stays permanently mounted in the home. A portable case is harder to keep organized but it is definitely the choice that gives you the most flexibility. A square corner waterproof duffle sport bag works great if you choose one that’s about 2 feet long, a foot tall, and a foot deep. This size is larger enough to hold everything in one case yet light enough for you to be able to carry.

You will need to make sure that your first aid kit has vinyl or latex gloves, a CPR mask or shield, and airways if you are trained in them. This equipment is needed to help protect you from transmittable diseases.

The trauma part of your kit is by far the most important part. Sure mostly you’ll have to deal with those small cuts and bruises non of which are life threatening but you need to be prepared for those horrible injuries that can happen anytime and can truly be life threatening. For those moments your kit should have:

Bandages – two 3″ stretchy, self-adhering roller gauze and two 4″ stretchy, self-adhering roller gauze

Band-Aids – One box of cloth bandages with assorted sizes. Two roles band-aid adhesive where you can cut off the size you need.

Dressings – A variety of sizes of sterile gauze bandages

General-Purpose Gauze Pads – These have very versatile and can be used for many things. They vary in padding and absorbency that is what makes them so versatile. If you only choose one type of gauze pads these are the ones to have.

Combine and Trauma Dressing – These high-absorbency padded dressings should be purchased in the larger sizes. Your other general pads will work for smaller wounds but you want to be able to address larger wounds.

Tape – 1″roll tape. Have at least a couple of rolls in your kit.

Great now that takes care of the material items to deal with trauma now you need the medical items for cleaning and caring for the wounds and other issues.

Iodine – Good for cleaning wounds and preventing infection.

Betadine – is excellent for washing and sterilizing wounds and is a good choice for those with iodine allergies.

One Tube of Topical Antibiotic Cream

Include one small bottle of each Tylenol, Ibuprofen and Aspirin.

Include a small bottle of Benadryl and a packet of Sudafed capsules.

Antacid – Include one bottle of any one of the following: Mylanta, Pepto Bismol and Maalox.

Imodium is quick acting or any other preference you might have.

Anti constipation – Include one small bottle of Metamucil

One small bottle of Tinactin or Mystatin

For dental pain include a tube of Orajel or Orabase as well as Clove Oil.

Oral Electrolyte Replacement Solution such as Gatorade.

Activated Charcoal – Used to draw ingested poisons and other detrimental substances into itself, so it can be digested safely.

Ipecac Syrup to influence vomiting.

Hang on we are just about done. We just have the hardware items.

Tweezers – are very important for hard-to-reach splinters.

Pins – This includes safety and bed pins

Plastic Bags – Carry many different sizes are recommended.

Thermometer – This is necessary for conditions such as hypothermia.

Trauma Shears – Used to cut everything from bandages to splints.

BP Cuff & Stethoscope – They can be very necessary and useful in case of injury or sickness.

Survival Blanket – This is a necessary item for shelter and insulation.

Splinting – This is a necessary emergency supply.

That is an awful lot of items to organize. I recommend building dividers and using zip locks in various sizes then clearly marking them.

Benefits of First Aid certification

While we all hope that we are never in a life threatening situation it is very important to know what to do should one arise.  First Aid Certification as well as CPR certification can provide you with the skills you need to react with confidence in life-threatening situations.  There are several online certification programs that offer certification in a variety of emergency skills.  One important thing to look out for is that the material is up-to-date.  The rules and regulations that govern safety training change fairly regularly and it is important that you are receiving the most up to date training possible.

How long does your certification last?  Well it often depends on what you get certified in.  For example, if you were to get a CPR certification it usually lasts about 2 years.  It is also important to have proof of your First Aid Certification so you should receive some sort of certificate or certification card upon completion of your certification course.  This certificate can be used to show your certification when you apply for jobs that require emergency skills as part of the job requirement.  Even with all this it is a good idea to choose a company with a money back guarantee, so that if for any reason you are not satisfied with the training you receive you can get your money back.  That shows that the training company is confident in their training materials.

If you receive your CPR certification you will learn about a number of things including the Good Samaritan laws, which protect people from liability if they choose to help someone who is injured or ill.  The course will also teach you the different ways to administer CPR depending on if the recipient is an adult, child, or infant.  All this good CPR information is combined with important First Aid Certification information like how to control bleeding, and how to care for a person who has suffered shock.  For example, if you are trying to stop bleeding it is a good idea to apply pressure directly to the wound with a gauze pad, which promotes the coagulation of the blood.

First Aid Certification also teaches you more, like how to care for burns and poisoning.  It is important to soak a burn in cold water and then apply some type of soothing ointment to the burn.  Taking some sort of over-the counter pain reliever is also a good idea.  The CPR certification will teach you how to put someone in the proper recovery position in order to help the person breathe and to drain fluid away from the person’s nose and throat if an unconscious victim were to vomit.

Whether First Aid Certification is something that you want to receive for personal reasons or it is training that you want to provide on a corporate level it is a good idea to keep in mind all your options including the option to receive your certification online.  It is also very easy to receive specialty certification through an online certification program, like CPR certification.  Whether in a business setting or just personal reasons you can be prepared for life-threatening emergency situations.

Airsoft Gun Safety and First Aid: Play Safe!

first aid bandages

No matter how safe a game or sport is, the fact still remains that there’s just no such thing as a pastime that’s guaranteed to be accident- (or incident-) free. This holds true for bike riding, jogging, baseball, and even airsoft guns. But just like everything else, if you use the proper safety techniques, are aware of some of the basic mishaps and carry a suitable first aid kit, you’ll be able to enjoy a worry-free day of airsoft fun.

First on our list of safety topics is the all-important first aid kit. While most of the major playing fields and areas will have a substantial kit or a medical professional available, you might want to consider the possibility of injury when you’re well out of range of the base. For this reason and many others, you should always carry a personal-sized first aid kit. Most discount retailers, convenience stores and pharmacies carry the “ready-made” kits for you to grab and go, or you can make your own for a lot less money. It needs to be the right size to carry with you at all times, but also needs to hold the essentials like waterproof band-aids, eye-wash pods (to get dust and other tiny, foreign objects out of eyes), Tylenol or Advil, wound dressing, wound disinfecting spray and medical tape. Remember that you’ll want to treat a small cut or abrasion early on before it gets infected and becomes a real problem.

It also might be a good idea to carry a cold-pack and an Ace bandage or other flexible support with you in your gear bag to aid in any ankle or wrist twists that may happen during your adventure. Slipping on wet grass or leaves, or turning holding your airsoft rifle incorrectly for a prolonged period of time can have quite an impact on certain body parts.

But the most important of all safety tips is to wear your protective gear like gloves and other body coverings. Always use your protective eyewear according to the manufacturer’s instructions, as eye injuries can be some of the most painful of all. If your eye ruptures, there is a good chance that you will lose your eyesight permanently, so don’t try to “look cool” by skipping protective eyewear!

Common sense reminds us to know our bodies when heading out for a safe day of airsoft. If you have weak ankles, be sure to wear the proper footwear and ankle support for a long day on your feet. If you’re prone to back pain, a back brace or other support will help to keep you comfortable and pain free while you spend some relaxing time practicing the latest maneuvers and tactics in the realm of airsoft guns.

A Look At The World of Warcraft Profession First Aid

first aid bandages

Want to rescue people’s lives? Want to mend poison and heal grave wounds? Become a Physician! This secondary skill allows you to create various bandages that can be used to help yourself and other players. Physicians create bandages and apply them to other players that are injured. You must have the first aid skill to apply a bandage to another player.

The benefit of this skill is the ability to heal yourself (and others) using items created from ingredients you are finding anyway while you are killing monsters. You might be throwing these first aid ingredients away, but you should instead turn them into something useful.

Since First Aid does not take up one of the two profession slots, every player can get it without penalty. Some say that Tailors shouldn’t get First Aid because it wastes cloth, however, you can gather enough cloth to do both.

First Aid is also almost a requirement for Raids. While fighting powerful bosses, Raid leaders sometime say “run away and bandage.” Even classes that have healing can still benefit from bandages because bandages conserve mana.

Bandages are channel cast and heal over time. If the player bandaging or the player being bandaged is struck in combat, the bandaging effect ends. Either way, the target still gets the “recently bandaged” debuff. It’s really annoying to start to bandage, be hit, then you can no longer use another bandage for 60 seconds. The bandage is wasted and the target is not fully healed. For this reason, try to only use bandages when you won’t be attacked. This is not always possible, especially when bandaging in battlegrounds. Try to go hide somewhere or run away from monsters before bandaging to reduce wasted bandages.

You can bandage multiple targets in a row such as yourself, your pet, and party members as long as you pick different targets to avoid the recently bandaged limit.

The recipes for Heavy Mageweave Bandage, Runecloth Bandage, and Heavy Runecloth Bandage can be learned by visiting your faction’s Artisan First Aid questgiver.

You will need to purchase an Expert First Aid book to advance First Aid higher than 125. These can sometimes be found in the auction house. You also need to purchase Manual: Heavy Silk Bandage, and Manual: Mageweave Bandage. Alliance players need to buy the books from Deneb Walker in Stromgarde Keep in Arathi Highlands. He can be difficult to find. He’s inside the keep on the safe side in a dark corner past a little bridge. Horde players need to find Balai Lok’Wein in Brackenwall Village in Dustwallow Marsh.

The minimum level for Artisan First Aid is 35. To advance past 225 First Aid you will need to be taught by a doctor. This involves performing a special task involving saving patients before a timer is up. Horde players must speak to Doctor Gregory Victor in the town of Hammerfall in Arathi Highlands. Alliance players talk to Doctor Gustaf VanHowzen in Dustwallow Marsh.
