With vacation time at hand and more activities taking place, a well-stocked first-aid kit, kept within easy reach, is a necessity in every home. Having supplies gathered ahead of time will help you handle an emergency at a moment’s notice. Make sure that you and your family are prepared to treat the most common injuries, and emergencies that will take place over the summer.
This is also the beginning of the storm season. After a quiet start to 2009 Hurricane season, three storms have started in just 30 hours.
You and your family’s safety depend to a large extent on what you do now, before there is a storm on your horizon. Planning and preparation are the two most powerful survival tools at your disposal, and it is simply unwise not to make full use of them. To this end, be sure to have a comprehensive first aid / emergency kit close by.
A first aid kit is a collection of supplies and equipment necessary to provide immediate care to an injured or ill person before treatment by medically trained personnel. The kit will be made up of different contents depending on the place where the kit will be used and the number of persons it needs to protect. Will it just be your family at the cottage, or will there be extra guests?
It is recommended that your first aid kit be assembled in a clean, waterproof container to keep the contents safe and aseptic. Most kits come in durable plastic boxes, fabric pouches or in wall mounted cabinets. The type of container will vary depending on where they will be used and will range in size from pocket sized through to large backpacks. A wall mounted first aid cabinet would be perfect at home or cottage, but a fabric bag would be better suited in your vehicle.
First aid kits available through your local stores are generally intended for treatment of very minor injuries only. Typical contents include adhesive bandages, gauze and a disinfectant. Specialized first aid kits are available for various locations and activities, and will focus on specific risks related to that activity.
For example, first aid kits designed for use in a boat will contain seasickness remedies. Kits designed for industrial applications will contain burn medication and a suitable infection barrier for performing artificial respiration. They will also have larger quantities of supplies to treat multiple victims.
Trauma injuries, such as bleeding from cuts and scrapes, bone fractures or burns, are usually the main focus of most first aid kits designed for the home; however these kits are also practical for use while traveling, at the cottage or during a disaster related evacuation. These kits will include:
Adhesive bandages
Adhesive tape
Sterile Dressings (applied directly to wound)
Sterile eye pads
Sterile gauze pads
Antiseptic wipes or sprays
Sterile non-adherent pads, containing a non-stick Teflon layer
Triple antibiotics
Bandages (non-sterile for securing dressings)
Gauze roller bandages
Elastic bandages (used for sprains)
Triangular bandages (used as slings, tourniquets and to tie splints)
Blood stoppers, to promote clotting for severe bleeding.
Butterfly closure strips (to close wounds)
CPR mouth piece
Splints, to stabilize broken bones
Burn dressing (sterile pad, soaked in a cooling gel)
Gloves (disposable)
Trauma shears, for cutting clothing and general use
Tweezers
Alcohol pads (sterilizing equipment)
Flashlight
Instant-acting chemical cold packs
Alcohol rubs or antiseptic hand wipes (hand sanitizer)
Thermometer
Emergency blanket
First Aid Booklet (Read the entire booklet so you’ll understand how to use the contents of your kit)
It is an excellent idea to include Aspirin, primarily used for central medical chest pain, as an anti-coagulant and Acetaminophen for pain relief.
Anti-inflammatory painkillers such as Ibuprofen can also be used in the case of a strained joint.
Don’t forget extra prescription medications if you are going away for your vacation.
Remember to check the contents of all of your kits regularly and replace the items that have been used before you need them again.
While there is no way to predict when and where an injury or natural disaster may occur, being prepared with the proper first aid and emergency gear will give you and your family a much better chance of getting through the difficult times.

g a paltry box of band aids or a tube of cleaning solution in a drawer is simply not sufficient for handling an unexpected emergency. Surprisingly, many Australians don’t keep well stocked first aid kits in the home – and some very tragic results can occur.
First Aid Kits In The Home -
Whether your home is big or small, it’s critical to keep a well stocked first aid kit in an easy-to-access place in the home. You can purchase a kit through a Brisbane first aid supplier; once you have one, let everyone in the house know precisely where you plan on keeping it. With many accidents, even fractions of a second can make a difference; the more time it takes for someone to find the required supplies, the higher the risk of a serious injury or a life threatening complication. Don’t put the health and safety of the people in your home at risk: keep a first aid keep somewhere safe and sound.
First Aid Kits In The Car -
Many of us spend a great deal of time in our vehicles. Even if you don’t, keeping in mind the fact that accidents can happen anywhere and at anytime means that it’s imperative to keep a first aid kit in your car. A minor cut can become a major problem if you don’t have the bandages or band aids within easy reach. Why let an otherwise innocuous incident blow up into a major deal, when a well stocked first aid kit can save the day? Better yet, get some training through Brisbane first aid courses; you’ll have the supplies you need and you’ll know just what to do, no matter what.
First Aid Kits In The Workplace -
Work-related injuries are a very serious and real problem. Even if you work in a seemingly safe office environment, mishaps happen all the time. It’s very smart to keep at least a couple of first aid kits in a few strategically placed – and well advertised – locations in the office. For this reason, regardless of where an accident may occur, all employees should know exactly where they can locate the required supplies. By being prepared, appropriate action can be taken resulting with a far less stressful incident.

Injuries happen daily. You should always have common knowledge of injuries when it comes to first aid. First Aid is just giving the patient care when injured or ill, where the victim became injured or ill. ” First Aid ” is like being the first responder. First Aid is the initial care that’s given to the victim before medically trained personnel arrive, or before the victim arrives at a health care center. First you should pay more attention to the most critical problems, like opening of an airway, the presence of bleeding, and function of the heart. Keep the patient as warm and as comfortable as possible. If the victim is conscious, ask for details of their medical history, a known heart condition, or allergic reactions to drugs. If the victim is unconscious, look for a medical identification card, bracelet, or a necklace. Try not to move your victim. But if you do move the victim, move them as little as possible, particularly if there is a possibility of broken bones. If they’re vomiting, just move their head so the vomit can exit easily out of their mouth so they don’t breath in the vomit. Hopefully by now, the victim is stable enough until professional personnel arrives. There’s more information in the Trauma Injury Article. There are also first aid manuals you can find, or first aid kits you can buy that supply a first aid manual. First responder first aid kits are the best auto first aid kits, just in case you need it for a huge emergency. There are cheaper first aid bags or kits you can find for your vehicle. But you can find any size first aid bag or first aid kit that fits your needs. From travel first aid kits and home first aid kits, to sports first aid kits, business first aid kits, and marine first aid kits, there are dozens to choose from. Or, find a bag or box and build your own first aid kit. Try to remember a little something about injuries in case you need that information in the future, whether you’re the victim or you’re treating someone.

Basic first aid is the front lines of medical treatment. In many cases this can be the complete treatment. Whether it is an injury or sickness; the best in basic first aid follows the old Boy Scouts motto of “Be Prepared”. It involves learning how to effectively provide basic first aid. Knowing the different scenarios that can happen will give you a lot of food for thought.
Basic first aid training involves learning to stop wounds from bleeding, expelling items that are being choked on, splinting injured limbs, clearing fluid from breathing channels removing splinters and more. Another important aspect found in basic first aid is knowing your limits. Calling for help is needed sometimes.
Today there are many opportunities available for learning basic first aid. In addition there are more advanced first aid courses specializing and detailing more. CPR is yet another popular course in this area. With basic first aid classes you will learn detailed aspects and wind up with a manual too. It’s wise to keep a copy of the manual handy in your first aid kits.
Basic first aid training will help you to understand the details of emergency situations and other injury treatments. Outside simple injuries such as cuts, bruises, minor sunburns, and similar you are simply the frontline until more qualified help is in place. When you are in doubt of any aspect of basic first aid, it’s very wise to be on the phone with a medical authority’s advice while maintaining the situation.
Your role is comfort, and other aspects such as stopping bleeding, putting a splint on broken or sprained limbs, and clearing the throat. Things more intensive than basic first aid will be tasks that the next line covers. Prescription medicine, stitches, and even surgery are all things that require more extensive medical treatment.
Don’t think for one minute that basic first aid isn’t important even in severe cases. If you don’t stop the bleeding, by the time those with the medical training to do much more won’t be able to do anything; if their patient is no longer alive. You can be the difference between life and death. For these reasons, whether it’s part of your job or not, it’s wise to have first aid kits and basic training on them. This way you can make the difference.
Your basic first aid kit should have a mix of bandage sizes. As training will show you, there are a number of needs in this area. Further you will probably learn a little about improvising as well. Some over the counter medications should also be in there such as pain relievers, antibiotic ointment, stomach relief, sterilization solutions and antihistamines. A few tools such as tweezers, a thermometer and scissors will be needed too. The best first aid kit will have useful local numbers for emergency help as well.
When it comes to basic first aid, it’s wise to have training no matter what you do. Having the resources to carry it out is great. You never know in personal or professional settings what will come up and with knowledge you may be able to save the day!

ght (c) 2009 Jonathan Perez
There is absolutely no way of knowing when something tragic may come upon us. Regardless, what’s crucial is that we are prepared for these occurrences. When it comes to these happenings we need some assistance. But it’s not intelligent to try to get help then. When this happens, we can definitely look at them as being emergency situations.
The emergency situations should be supported by the emergency Supplies. So we can understand the importance of such emergency supplies.Because we can feel the benefit of having adequate Emergency Supplies.
Just like the Emergency Supplies , First Aid Kits have equal importance in our life. The fact that there is always the possibility for injuries and accidents that you wouldn’t have thought would happen. No matter the injury is serious or simple,we have to provide the immediate actions to save from the critical situation. For that we should have First Aid Kits with us.At critical situations we have to make use the First Aid Kits before calling a doctor. This will give sudden and partial relief to the injured people. It will help the doctor to make his duty easy.
Whether you think so or not, it’s fascinating to know how first aid kits and emergency supplies got there start. The First Aid Kits should be kept not only in home, but it should be there in office, vehicles and in any other public places. The emergency supplies can be medicines. We know urgent medicines are very important to a patient’s life.So we can consider it as a very important and emergency thing. We have to be prepared with the urgent medicines before the disaster strikes.
There may be some that are a little unsure about what exactly is in their first aid kits. What is the first aid kit consist of?The kit has different components in it for different type of injuries. And these types will depend on the person who assembled it and the actual purpose of the kit.Anyway these kits have some common components. Those are the items to control bleeding and some common medicines etc.We can say that it is a collection of emergency supplies.
Let us check out the different first aid kits available. Those are Home first aid kits,Car first aid kits, children first aid kits, sports first aid kits, business first aid kits etc.Even though the names are different all of these kits have unique objective. All of these are kept with an intention of providing safety.Let us know briefly about these first aid kits so that we have clear idea about its usage.
In daily life we have to be prepared for dealing with the every day cuts, burns, injuries and illness at home, work, or at play.It is very usual in home.So we need home first aid kits. Accidents at home should be treated soon otherwise it may lead to death. The items in a home first aid kit should be easily accessible.Because the common people in home may need to use at accidents, not the trained people. It should be accessible at any time.
Now let us check different emergency supplies. The emergency supplies are the things you may not even consider as important. But those are actually the emergency supplies. Those are water, food, first aid kits, personal items, clothing, communication, disinfectant, child care supplies, disabled related supplies etc. Keep these apart and classified as emergency supplies.Because no one predict the time of need.
There are other things that may be contained within an emergency kit, for example things such as the list of drugs that some has been prescribed by their physician to take and paperwork that’s extremely important and sensitive.Emergency reference materials should be kept.Fire extinguisher is very important in all the places.Fire starters and igniters, such as matches, must always be kept in something that won’t allow them to get wet.We have to remember one thing that the most safe thing is to avoid accidents rather than keeping all first aid kits and emergency supplies.

First aid or medical kits should be found in every household and automobile. Accidents happen when we least expect them and being prepared can sometimes mean the difference between life and death. The most common types of accidents include cuts, scrapes, burns, and insect bites. A large percentage of accidents happen in and around the home, then out in the great outdoors, and final in and around vehicles.
A kit should be readily available both inside the home and when the family is outdoors. It is also important to keep a kit in your garage for outside emergencies and in your vehicle for emergencies that may occur when you are traveling. A kit should also be a part of every emergency preparedness plan. When preparing for a natural disaster, most experts believe everyone should have emergency supplies for at least the first 72 hours. It is a good idea to include at least a 72 hour supply of any prescription medications as well. First aid or medical kits are a must in households that have children. Children can be very accident prone and it is better to be prepared than caught unaware. It is important that each member of the family be familiar with the contents of your kit and knows how to use them.
Your kit should consider the needs of each individual family member. It is very important to change the medications in the first aid kit periodically. Most medications have an expiration date, which can be written down on a piece of paper and kept inside the first aid kit. Also, include items such as glucose monitors and blood pressure monitors for family members that have diabetes and/or high blood pressure.
Every kit should include the following basic items, a assortment of gauze pads, adhesive tape, various bandages, antibiotic ointment, cotton swabs, eye drops, latex gloves, a tweezer, bottled water for cleaning wounds, and a first aid handbook. All kits should include prescription medications as well as non-prescription medications such as syrup of ipecac used to induce vomiting if instructed by a poison control center, medicines for treating bee stings, antihistamines for itching and allergic reactions, and pain medications such as aspirin.
If you had an emergency in your home or vehicle today, would you be prepared? Most people don’t like to think about emergencies and this often results in not being prepared for household accidents. Don’t leave your family’s safety to chance. Be sure your home and vehicle are properly equipped with a first aid or medical emergency kit today!

The workplace is often filled with people who are about the business of getting work done. When the job is a manufacturing or production plant where machinery and various other types of manual labor processes are done, it makes sense to have first aid kits on location because they can save lives. Many companies even have mandated safety requirements that indicate that first aid kits are required in many different areas where accidents can occur.
The business office atmosphere is not exempt from having these valuable kits around either. Even elementary schools have them in the nurse’s office. It is even a good practice to have a safety kit in the car for those individuals who work in the field or spend a great deal of time on the road during the course of their duties. It may go almost without saying that the home office can also benefit on many levels from having a first aid kit in place.
A small standard first aid kit is often enough for low impact areas where cuts and injuries need only to be cleansed and bandaged before an employee can return to work. These kits usually have a variety of different size bandages such as tiny strips for a paper cut and larger gauge-type bandages that can cover more surface of the skin or serve as a temporary compress until the necessary medical attention can be received.
There are first aid kits that contain more than simple bandages however. These kits are designed to save lives when serious accidents occur on the job. The contents of such kits can vary greatly beyond the basics because they may be designed for a specific type of workplace. For example, on a construction site, there may be supplies in the kit that include tweezers for extracting particles from under the skin such as wood or glass and salves to apply to burns that can result from fire or electricity.
Some of the most sophisticated first aid kits have defibrillation machines included for life threatening emergencies where a heart has stopped beating and needs to be stimulated. Often this can save a life because the time it takes for emergency personnel to arrive, especially in a remote location, can be too long. These functional, resourceful kits often contain many needed first aid items such as aspirin, smelling salts to revive those who are unconscious, poison control for accidental inhalation, burn ointment, eye wash solution, thermometer to check for fever or low body temperature and an ice pack.
Anti-itch medications, CPR masks, laxatives, and antihistamines are also items that workplace first aid kits contain to ensure that accidents and other medical needs that arise on the job can be safely handled. This is to ensure the health of the workers and to protect the company from lawsuits against the organization. Although no first aid kit can contain supplies to handle every possible medical trouble that arises, the properly stocked first aid kit can handle everyday accidents and keep your workplace in good shape by taking care of small mishaps on the spot.

Anyone who ever spent time in the Boy Scouts remembers breaking out the first aid kits for the inevitable bouts of first aid training. Not quite as arbitrary as algebra, true, but any good Scout still remembers thinking more often that he’d like: “Why do we need to learn all of this? We have doctors, after all, and first aid kits!”
The answer: you need to know basic first aid techniques for when you don’t have doctors or first aid kits. You need to know basic first aid techniques because when the worst happens and someone really depends on you, you’re the last line between life and death.
The basic method you should follow in any first aid situation is simple: just know your ABCs.
A stands for Airway. Make sure that the person who requires first aid has a clear airway before you do anything else. A lack of oxygen is one of the quickest causes of death in human beings, and even a few seconds of restricted breathing can lead to serious brain damage. So when someone’s injured near you, the first thing to do is to ensure their airway is clear. Much basic CPR training consists of techniques to clear a blocked airway, and any good restaurant will have an instructional poster on the wall instructing patrons on how to perform the Heimlich maneuver.
If you don’t have CPR training or can’t do the Heimlich maneuver, make your best effort to slap the injured person on the back and thrust carefully into the abdomen to force air up from the lungs, hopefully clearing the passage. Don’t forget to hold back the person’s head as well, in case they’ve swallowed their tongue. Opening the airway is ninety per cent of first aid in emergency situations–once you’ve done that, remember to check B and C as well (Breathing and Circulation.) If they’re good, you’re good, and you can begin treating any less immediately life-threatening injuries.
To treat a cut, apply pressure to the wound. If you’re near water that you can trust, it’s a good idea to keep the wound as clean as possible, but if not, settle for good, steady pressure. Applying pressure to a wound helps to slow and hopefully to stop the loss of blood. If you lack a first aid kit with bandages and iodine, this is the single most effective thing you can do to stop bleeding. In addition, it’s a good idea to elevate the injured limb in order to prevent addition blood loss.
There are plenty of excellent first aid techniques, and it’s difficult to scratch the surface of everything you need to know in the space of this one article. It’s a good idea to take a course on the subject: plenty of community centers or gyms will be more than happy to teach you. And remember to always keep a well-stocked first aid kit on hand if you’re going camping or hiking. After all, good first aid techniques can be the last line of defense against death–but preparation is the first.

First aid kits are a standard feature on school buses continent-wide. While that basic white box with the Red Cross on the front is a familiar and welcome symbol, seeing a first aid kit in place is not enough to guarantee that a school bus is well-equipped.
A recent accident in Florida brought home the fact that the simple presence of a first aid kit is no indication of its contents and their usefulness. In this particular case, people rushing to help a young bicyclist hit by a school bus found that the bus’s first aid kit contained rotten gauze that disintegrated in their hands.
This situation raises questions about school bus safety checks and the effectiveness of inspections that merely verify the bus has a sealed kit on board. With no expiry date and no way to tell how long any particular kit has been in place, officials can’t judge the soundness of a first aid kit. In light of this, some school boards are already taking steps.
Tracking kits is one way to ensure that they don’t outstay their shelf life. Officials can monitor when a kit is installed on a bus and also make record of the disposal of expired kits. Another way to ensure the safety and effectiveness of first aid kits is to conduct random checks of their contents – making sure all the necessary features are inside and opening some of the individual packages to make sure they’re in good shape.
In Florida it was the gauze that went bad, a serious concern, since school bus kits generally contain several gauze pads and bandages. There are other items contained in the kit that could also degrade with the passage of time, including adhesive strips or tape, eye pads, CPR face shields and ointments.
As school and transport safety officials have begun to realize, having well-stocked first aid kits on school buses is not enough. The best stocked kit in the world isn’t any good if the contents have outlived their usefulness – only organized first aid kit tracking and more thorough inspections can ensure a safe and effective kit.
