One of the great things about planning an Oregon camping trip is the number of options visitors have, both in things to do and see and in where to stay. With nearly 100 state and federal Oregon campgrounds and even more privately owned facilities, the challenge won’t be finding Oregon campgrounds, it will be deciding which ones to choose.
When to Go
For most people, work and school schedules often help determine when they can take an Oregon vacation. Those with kids typically have to wait for the summer months if they want to visit for more than a few days. For most this works out great because Oregon weather is at its warmest, and it is the peak of the travel season so all the Oregon campgrounds and attractions are open. Reservations are recommended during the summer months as many of the most popular campgrounds tend to fill up fast.
Many festivals are held in the summer, wild and cultivated flowers are in bloom, and there is even a resident group of whales along the coast for those that want to experience Oregon’s legendary whale watching.
Whale watching is at its peak in March, making spring an ideal time to visit Oregon, especially the coastal area. Snowmelt also increases the water levels in rivers, creating churning rapids just waiting to be kayaked or rafted.
Autumn is a good time to visit if you plan to fish Oregon coastal rivers and streams. Steelhead and salmon enter these waters to spawn beginning in September and continuing into late fall. Forest Service offices provide information on fishing conditions in their areas, as do websites for the local communities.
Fall is also a good time to visit one of Oregon’s vineyards. The Willamette Valley, slightly inland from Oregon’s northwest coast, is known as wine country, and there are numerous wineries that offer tours and tastings.
In addition to fishing and wine tasting, the fall foliage is in full color and the Oregon camping sites are typically less crowded than in summer months. Contact the Oregon Fall Foliage Hotline at 1-800-547-5445 to find peak color times for the areas you plan to visit.
Winter is the perfect time to visit Oregon if you like skiing, snowboarding, and other snow activities. In the winter months, average inland daytime temperatures are often in the 40s. A second whale migration in December through January makes a winter trip to the Oregon coast appealing as well. The ocean climate helps keep temperatures relatively mild, and winter camping in Oregon can be cozy and comfortable with proper clothing and camping equipment. Even in mid January, temperatures often reach into the 50s in the coastal areas.
Many of the state park campgrounds remain open year round although running water may not be available. Fewer families come to Oregon in the winter months, so if you like quiet getaways, this may be the best time to visit Oregon.
Choosing Oregon Camping Sites
City living: Portland, Eugene and several other larger cities in Oregon have numerous campsites close to town for those that want to be close to the action but still enjoy the fun of RV travel or tenting it. Even Oregon’s more populated areas are surrounded by forests, mountains, and waterways, so finding a natural setting is not difficult.
Private campgrounds in Oregon: There are hundreds of private campgrounds throughout all areas of Oregon. Some cater to families with children and offer playgrounds, activities, and other kid-friendly features. Others are more basic or focus on nature and peaceful settings. No matter what your areas of interest and your camping style, you can likely find a private campground to fit your needs. Begin by contacting visitor information offices or city chambers of commerce in the area of the state you plan to visit.
Oregon state park camping: The number of state parks, scenic sites and recreation areas in Oregon is simply amazing. While some of these are day use only facilities, many provide overnight camping with both tent and RV sites. Often, these Oregon state park camping sites are located in some of the state’s most beautiful scenery, and fees are typically comparable or less than those at privately owned campgrounds.
For a truly unique experience, some Oregon state park camping areas offer camping in tepees, yurts and covered wagons. Visit the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s state parks website at http://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/PARKS/index.shtml to find Oregon camping sites in the area you plan to visit. When you get to the park, don’t forget to stop and get your permit or park pass.
Oregon beach camping: Oregon is one of only two states in the U.S. whose beaches are all considered public land. The beaches are managed by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, and many offer camping facilities. With the stars overhead and the sound of the surf providing background music, Oregon beach camping can be one of the most memorable ways to experience the beauty of the Oregon coast. Note: it is illegal to camp on the beach in unauthorized areas, and anyone setting up camp without permission can be asked to leave.
What to Bring When Camping in Oregon
In addition to the standard food, water, clothing, first aid items and camping equipment, it is advisable to also include:
• a hat
• sweatshirts and jackets for layering
• a plastic garbage bag, to use as a rain poncho just in case
• a map of the area
• a flashlight
• bug repellent
• a pocket mirror (for signaling if you get lost)
• a whistle
Check all your equipment before you leave to make sure it works properly and is in good condition. Many Oregon campgrounds are in remote locations where it can be difficult to find replacement batteries or lantern fuel in the middle of the night. For this reason, it is also helpful to know some basic first aid and wilderness survival information.
Other Considerations
Weather conditions, construction and repairs, and standard regulations can impact campground activities and services. For example, some Oregon campgrounds prohibit alcohol. Open campfires may be restricted at certain times of the year. Buildings and natural areas may be closed. Pets may not be allowed or allowed only in certain areas of the campground. It is a good idea to contact your chosen campsite or visit their website to learn about rules, regulations, and current conditions.

Cats are an interesting animal that must be given respect. You cannot force a cat to comply with your rules like other animals and in fact trying to do so will yield in aggressive cat behavior. If a cat thinks it is cornered or you are trying to force it to do something it doesn’t want to do, it will either run away or go into a defensive position (if it thinks it cannot get away). You don’t want to touch or try to pick up a frightened cat, that would be a mistake you will regret with painful cuts that will ensue when the cat starts to slice you with his claws both hands and feet.
A cat demands respect and there are ways to give it such respect while still demanding that the cat behaves a certain way. You have to approach a cat with diplomacy and tact. A cat that respects you and has a rapport with you tends to listen better but you will have to make the cat think that it’s decisions are his (or her) own. You can find manuals on cat training that will show you a glimpse into the cat world, the cat psychology, so you understand the foundation of how a cat acts and reacts.
Knowing what works and what will become counter productive is key to training a cat to behave. Often a cat becomes aggressive due to being abused in the past, or people scaring it. Cats have a good memory and associate behavior of other people to new people until it has a chance to get to know the new people and realize they mean it no harm. Aggressive behavior is not always there to prove dominance or testosterone, it is more often than not a protective mechanism and it can be deactivated by simply respecting the cats space and giving him a chance to come around.
Patience is a virtue in this situation but you can not just ignore the cat and expect it to come around completely on its own. You want to communicate with the cat, place desirable food close to him but do not chase him into the pantry or force him to come out. Patience and time are needed and putting yourself in front of the cat from a distance will forge a relationship with the cat. In time the cat will come to trust you and will build a relationship with you.
Just because the cat is laying down right in front of you doesn’t necessarily mean it wants or will let you pet it yet. Moving in close slowly like putting your hand near him and gauging his reaction is essential. Once he lets you pet him pet him for a moment then draw back slowly increasing the time you pet him each time. Once a cat fully trusts you then there are additional ways to train him to behave in your space.

For a horse, in his ideal little world, he would live his days wandering acres of land, spending the majority of his time grazing, in the fresh air, far away from dust allergies and mould spores. However, he’s not in his ideal little world, he’s in ours, and for the responsible and caring owners who do their best to provide our animals with everything they need, some times it’s unavoidable for them to spend time cooped up in a stable.
‘Oh my!’ I may hear you cry, ‘My stable is big, it has windows, he has the best hay. He wants for nothing!’ Yes, indeed he may, but a stable, to an animal that has been genetically programmed over millions of years to wander the plains, any stable is cooped up. I don’t mean to offend, and I do understand that sometimes, it’s necessary, but there you are.
As a result of living in a stable, horses are often exposed to many different types of dust particles. These maybe from hay, straw, pollen etc. Just as in people, some of them will develop an allergy; and it’s impossible to predict which ones and when it will happen.
As a cautionary tale to those who have horses that don’t live in stables, I have a coloured cob, who I’ve owned since he was 2 years old and he’s never been in a stable, never mind lived in one. He’s now 13 and for the last 3 years, over winter, about 6 weeks after the hay starts going out, and I’m very picky about the hay and where it comes from, he gets a bit of a dusty cough, and you can see the extra effort involved in breathing. So there really is no telling.
COPD, otherwise known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder is the most commonly occurring medical equine disorder in the UK. In fact, respiratory diseases in general are a common problem to horses and ponies in general.
The indicators of COPD can vary greatly, and reflect the severity of the condition. At their worst, horses may be in a severe state of distress, with nasal discharge, much coughing and wheezing and the extra effort seen by the stomach muscles to aid expiration (breathing out) is clear to see.
The symptoms of COPD become visible when the airways attempt to challenge the allergens. These responses fall into three categories. There is inflammation of the airway walls, excess mucus production and the spasms of the bronchial walls; which results in the narrowing of the airways due to the contraction of the muscles in their walls. The end result is a reduced capacity for airflow. (Think asthma or trying to breath through a straw!)
If you should become concerned that your horse may be developing COPD, it’s important for you to get the vet out. He will be able to confirm or deny the problem, and advise on how best to go on from there.
The best action to take is to avoid the allergens. This generally involves 24hr turnout, and replacing hay with ‘haylage’ type substitutes, or complete feed nuts.
Sometimes, the horse owner is unable or unwilling to make these changes, and therefore the stable environment must be altered.
Good ventilation in stables is vital in all equine housing, but even more so when COPD is a problem. The majority of the allergens come from hay and bedding, so these must be substituted for something else. If a hay substitute is not available, the hay should be soaked for 20 minutes. This enables the dust and mould spores to absorb water and avoid becoming airborne.
A low dust bedding is also called for. It is possible to use no bedding when rubber mats are used, but some horses just will not be comfortable in this situation. If bedding is used, shredded paper or cardboard are good substitutes. Wood shavings can also work. Straw is no good as it too has a high mould spore content.
The make up of these alternatives can of course vary, so a bit of trial and error may be called for before you go buying in a barn full of something that’s not going to work.
Making these changes to feed and bedding does not remove the need for the utmost cleanliness, and a deep litter bedding system is a big no-no.
Of course, all this is a bit like whistling in the wind, if all the other stables in the vicinity are not managed the same way. It’s also a good idea to maybe make your exercise time, at the same time when everyone else is mucking out, to avoid the extra exposure to allergens at that time. Of course, this is not always possible.
COPD is a permanent thing, and these pointers are all to help with the management of a long term condition. There are also various herbal and or veterinary supplements that can help. Mind you, none of them are a cure, just another aid in management of the condition.
COPD, whilst it is a serious condition that needs consistent and conscientious management, it certainly doesn’t mean the end of the horses’ useful life. Many horses live and work perfectly well despite having it. It is down to us as owners to be diligent and find a system that works and to stick to it.

Are you planning on taking a camping trip in the near future? If this is your first time going camping, you will need to get camping gear to take with you, as you may not already own it. While your first impulse may be to head on down to your local sports store, did you know that you have another option as well? You do. In addition to buying your own camping gear, you may also be able to rent it.
When it comes to determining whether you should buy your own camping gear or just rent the camping gear that you need, you may have a difficult time deciding what to do. If you are wondering what you should do, you will want to continue reading on. Below, the pros and cons of both buying your own camping gear and renting your camping gear are outlined.
As for buying your own camping gear, you will find that the biggest con or downside to doing so is the cost. Depending on what you need to buy, it can get pretty expensive to purchase your own camping gear. With that in mind though, there are a number of camping gear equipment pieces, like camping tents or sleeping bags, that can be purchased for affordable prices. If you are looking to camp on a budget, you can still buy your own camping gear, but you just need to know where to look.
Although there are a number of downsides, like the price, to buying your own camping gear, you will also find that there are a number of pros or plus sides to doing so as well. One of those plus sides is the fact that you will own the camping gear in question. This means that you can use it as little or as often as you would like. If you are planning to take a number of camping trips in the future, you will find that it is easier, as well as cheaper in the long run, to buy your own camping gear.
It is also important to mention the freedom that you have, when buying your own camping gear. When buying your own camping gear, you can buy basically whatever you want. For instance, if you would like a camping tent that is the color black, you are free to do so. When you buy your own camping gear, you have the ability to be picky if you want to be. With a large selection of camping gear pieces to choose from, from a number of different retailers, the decision as to what you want to buy is yours to make.
If you are unable to buy your own camping gear or if you would prefer not you, your other option is to rent your camping gear. When it comes to renting camping gear, you will also find a number of pros and cons. As for the cons of renting your camping gear, you may find that you are faced with a limited selection of camping gear pieces to choose from. Many camping gear rental stations only carry the basic items, like tents, hot plates, and coolers. While you may have some choices, you will mostly find that your selection is limited.
As for the pros or plus sides to renting your camping gear, instead of buying it, you will find that the cost is much more affordable. Despite being relatively affordable, different camping gear rental stations charge different rental fees. You will also find that camping gear can typically be rented for as little as one day or as long as a couple of weeks. Renting your camping gear is nice if this is your first time going camping and if you are unsure as to whether or not you would be interested in doing so again.
As you can see, there are a number of pros and cons to both buying your own camping gear and renting it. In addition to the two above mentioned options, you may also want to think about borrowing camping gear from someone that you know. You may even be able to do so free of charge.

Horse riding is an incredible joyful experience. Learning to ride gives you a sense of mystical pleasure as you are able to communicate and become one with the horse.
Lessons are not just for professionals or competitive riders, even the occasional rider can enjoy the benefits of a lesson. Riding lessons enable a person to develop their skill in communicating to the horse with aids.
Lessons can help you to correct any bad habits you have picked up over the years. Formal horse riding lessons give you the advantage of having some one who is trained in horsemanship, watch you and guide you.
Many times a rider can feel that their horse is not moving correctly, but may not be sure how to change it. An instructor has all the tips and expertise to get you and your horse moving in the correct direction.
When you start to ride it can be the beginning of a lifelong love. A single accident can change the entire experience and put a complete stop to your desire to ride. I remember when we had a horse and my neighbor came over to ride with me. My father an in-experienced horse person put both of us up together, bareback.
Well in no time at all we both fell off and my neighbor refused to ever get back on a horse. If you have any doubts, concerns, fears or apprehension when you are first starting to ride, you will be able to work through these and overcome them in a controlled environment of a formal riding lesson.
Now I am not saying that you will never fall off when you are taking a riding lesson. I think that I fell off more in lessons than any other time in my riding adventures. However the horses that are used in riding lessons are accustomed to beginner riders.
When you are first starting to ride you can tend to bounce like a ball on and off of the saddle, so falling off is quiet natural. If you get on a horse for the first time in an open field and lose your balance, a horse can respond in various ways.
The horse is a good judge of character; the horse will know who is really in charge. He may very well take a hold of the reins, get a swing in his step and encourage you to bounce off. You land on the ground and the horse is charging across the field.
When you fall off whilst having a riding lesson, there are usually staff to pick you back up onto your feet and others to track down your horse. Not much time is wasted and you are once again learning the essentials skills to deepen your seat and relax.
Another reason to take formal riding lessons is so that you do not teach your horse bad habits. A horse that is not taught correctly is harder to sell than a horse that knows and responds well to horse riders aids.
Horses back riding lessons are hard work, they can be tough, but man they are rewarding when you get it right. If you cannot afford to have a lesson on a regular basis like once or twice a week, that’s okay. I do strongly recommend treating yourself to a riding lesson at least a couple times a year, if you get hooked, don’t blame me.

More and more children than at any time before are wanting to learn how to play golf. Why? Tiger Woods may have something to do with that. He has popularized the game of golf among children of all ages.
It seems that kids are finding out what the adults already know: golf is a lot of fun! As your children may enjoy banging out golf balls with one of your golf clubs, where do you start in developing their skills? Here are some helpful golf training aids in giving your child a head start in learning to play golf.
Get Them In A Class One of the most important things you can do for your child is to enroll them in a golf class. Let the professionals teach them the right golf teaching tools. Many local golf courses have golf instructional classes just for kids. There is also no need to rush out and purchase a set of golf clubs for your child. The class will provide the golf clubs for them. Not only will you save some money right now, but it will give you time to find out if your child truly enjoys the game of golf or not. The last thing you want to do is go out and spend a few hundred dollars on golf clubs only to find out later that your child doesn’t like golf after all.
Be Patient This tip is an important one for both you and your child. Have patience with your child. It’s so easy to want to see your child start pounding long bombs like John Daly and sinking 30 foot putts. For them to enjoy golf and want to continue learning the game they need your support. Let them progress at their own rate. The golf classes will do a world of good in helping to develop their own skills.
Encouragement While your out hitting golf balls on the driving range, be sure and give your child a lot of encouragement, even if they are spraying balls all over the range. They will pick up the finer points of the game later as they grow older. Take a moment and think about how it was for you when you first started out.
After your child has taken some classes and shows a real interest in the game of golf, then go ahead and get them there own set of golf clubs. Gave your child fitted properly. Of course, since they will be continually growing in height and weight, understand that the clubs you buy today may be too small within a year or two at the most.
Have Fun Take the time that you spend golfing with your children as a time of bonding. Enjoy yourselves and the time you’re out on the course. Use this time to develop good communication with your child. Talk about other issues going on other than golf. You’ll be surprised at how the golf course can help you and your children bond together. It will spill over into other areas of their lives as well.

So your medicine cabinet is overflowing with empty bottles and out of date prescription medication. Sounds like its time for a medicine cabinet make over. Using out of date medication can be detrimental to your health and not filling your prescriptions on time can end up costing you twice as much money. So instead of risking your health and money, here are 5 quick tips to get your medicine cabinet back into shape while saving you money.
1.Throw Out Your Old Prescription
The first step to revamping your medicine cabinet is to get rid of your old out of date prescriptions. It’s best to get rid of any medications that are out of date so that you don’t accidentally use them.
2.Find out the medications you need
Before you visit your doctor’s office make a list of the new prescriptions you need as well as the old ones that you need to get renewed. Don’t forget to right down any herbal supplements or dietary aids. Not only can you use this list to ask for the new prescriptions, you can also use it to comparison shop later.
3.Schedule an appointment with your primary care physician
Schedule a doctor’s appointment with your family doctor. Get a check up and ask for the prescription drugs you need as well as the medications you have that will expire. Ask for a prescription supply that is most common for the drug your are ordering. Most of the time this is a 90 or 100 day supply. Make sure to copy all of the original prescriptions for your personal records. This preventative checkup could help catch any serious problems before they develop and help save you more money than you can imagine.
4.Shop for the cheapest price
This can be done several ways. You can physically go to local pharmacies around your area which is very time consuming and ultimately doesn’t save you all that much money, or you can shop for you prescriptions online. Shopping online is the easiest and most economical way to shop for your prescriptions.
5.Find a cheap, reliable pharmacy
A good way to find a reliable pharmacy to order from is to go through a pharmacy advocacy group such as ePharmacies.com. This website lets you type in the prescription drug that you are looking for, then gives you a list of all the cheapest pharmacies that offer that specific drug at the lowest possible price. ePharmacies.com also has a pharmacy rating system that allows you to read feedback that other users have left; this helps to weed-out rogue, fly-by-night pharmacies.
If you follow these quick easy tips to revamping you medicine cabinet it will not only save your time and money, it will also improve your health! Visit this Consumer Advocacy website for more information on ordering from online pharmacies.

Lee tried to stifle a sneeze but couldn’t. Invisible to the naked eye, a cloud of almost five thousand virus-filled droplets launched into the air at some 150 km/ hour or roughly 100 mph. Some passengers in the wide-body Airbus frowned. The Hong Kong to London flight was long and no one wanted to catch a cold.
Lee planned to fill every waking moment of his stay in London. A concert at the Millennium Dome, dinners at some of the finest hotels, shopping in crowded malls — “What a chance,†Lee thought. All he had to concentrate on was a few hours in front of the International Board. It was his job to present sales trends in China to the bosses who were also winging it towards Heathrow, one of the world’s busiest airports. “The global executives will get only good news from me,†figured Lee. “Pity I don’t feel better …â€
The Diagnosis
Lee was exhausted. He had a cough, scratchy throat, runny nose and muscle aches. A fever started but it wasn’t until Lee began having difficulties breathing that he decided to get help.
Doctors huddled in subdued discussion. Experts were rushed in. It was finally determined that Lee’s body was fighting strenuously against two viruses. Lee had caught a highly infectious Influenza A virus — a flu bug. However, at much the same time he had also picked up a second virus called H5N1. The two viruses had mixed their genes and formed a hybrid. Since this was now a radically new pathogen, Lee had no immunity to it.
Lee was not the only one in this fight. Infected passengers from Lee’s plane from Hong Kong had connecting flights to major cities in most continents. The global executives Lee had addressed at the office had also flown home diseased. Sadly, some of the medical staff where Lee was diagnosed had also caught it not to mention the crowds Lee had interacted with at concerts, restaurants and on shopping sprees. The so-called Bird Flu or Avian Influenza had indeed spread its wings. It was the start of the first flu pandemic of the 21st century.
The News
Had Lee or any of the others known in time, they would have taken anti-viral drugs hoping to block or at least slow down the replication of the virus. At least the severity of some symptoms might have been eased not to mention a reduction in the duration of sickness. But time had run out – anti-viral medication needed to be taken within 48 hours of the first stages of the disease.
It wasn’t long before Lee was put on a respirator in quarantine. It also wasn’t long before the media found out Lee had Bird Flu. The public became nervous. The number of flu patients — real or imaginary — multiplied dramatically but nurses and hospital staff were strangely missing … using overdue holiday time or just not showing up for work at all. It was announced that schools, restaurants, and non-essential businesses would be closed. No deadline was given — no one knew for sure how long the measures would have to be in place.
The Public Announcement
Wisely, the public was advised to stock up on food and water. Newspapers advised people to stock up on toothpaste, toilet paper and treasure (cash). People were told to shop at off-peak hours and public transport was ordered to run 24 hours per day. But despite warnings to the contrary, doctor’s offices, hospitals and clinics were overrun. Faces masked in paper waited for hours in front of pharmacies in hope of getting relief. Despite clear instructions from health officials, panic broke out as folk finally fathomed that at best only one third of the population had access to anti-viral drugs. In rural areas and smaller towns, there wasn’t any chance at all.
The Short-term Havoc
Rumors and half-truths began to circulate causing public outcry and protests. Because the protests only helped spread the flu, quarantines were set in place. The public was told to stay at home indefinitely. Vibrant cities screeched to a halt as public transport shut down. Streets stank as garbage piled up. Shops were looted and in some cases those caught coughing were stoned. Safety services (fire, police, ambulance) were disrupted, fires burned out of control. Cross-border travel was curtailed killing tourism and all international sports events were cancelled. Food imports were banned creating shortages of meat, vegetables and wheat. Folk with chronic medical illnesses couldn’t get their medications. Soap and disinfectants — perhaps the simplest and most effective fight against the spread of disease — were in short supply; no one had thought to stock-pile soap.
The Controversy
Local governments and health organizations began to squabble over who had the power to do what. The question was of legalities: who would control distribution of anti-viral drugs and who would receive those drugs? Army barracks received attention but prisoners were ignored. Families with pets were labeled as ‘higher risk’ groups but no-one knew if these families should receive more help or less. As in-fighting became more severe, decision processing became more difficult. Who should give the daily press briefings? Who would organize mass cremation? Who would facilitate conferences for global medical meetings? The list grew rapidly.
The Waves
The first wave of the pandemic was over in three months time but not the shock. Bacterial disease such as cholera multiplied rapidly with catastrophic results across Africa and Asia. The longer-term, global recession began with the realization that supply-lines, manufacturing and food-production chains were desperately weakened through labor loss. Medical facilities were terribly understaffed. As usual, the poor had little chance of aid at all. And then came the second wave of Avian flu. It took over a year before the waves of sickness and death became controllable.
Lee actually survived it all. Although he “started†the pandemic, he also helped “end†it. Doctors used his blood to find the initial vaccine. Since Lee was also now immune, he not only volunteered to help where he could and also founded the World Association of Sensible Hygiene (WASH). More importantly, Lee and others like him helped disrupted societies regain their faith and hope and love. Since this was pandemic number 11 in the last 300 years, history had taught that it was inevitable that individuals and communities and countries would bounce back fairly quickly. But a bitter question remained. Would Lee and the rest of the world be better prepared for the next pandemic? Lee wondered that too as he bordered the wide-body Airbus destined for Mexico City.
